Termites are small, wingless insects that live in colonies underground. They feed on dead plant material, such as wood and leaves, and can cause significant damage to structures if left unchecked. Termites have a hard outer shell and long antennae. Their bodies are divided into three sections: head, thorax, and abdomen. They also have two pairs of wings which they shed after mating. Termites are social insects that live in large colonies made up of several different castes including workers, soldiers, alates (winged reproductive adults), and queens. They communicate with each other through pheromones and vibrations in the soil. In order to protect their colony from predators, termites build intricate mud tunnels around the perimeter of their nest.
